The art of watchmaking

For several generations, the watchmakers of A. Lange & Söhne have pursued one goal: to craft timepieces that represent the pinnacle of international watchmaking artistry. At its Glashütte manufacture, the Maison crafts only a few thousand wristwatches per year, each endowed exclusively with proprietary movements that are lavishly decorated and twice assembled by hand. With 73 manufacture calibres developed since 1990, Lange has secured a top-tier position among the world’s finest watch Maisons.

Unforgettable masterpieces

Icons include Lange 1, the first regularly produced wristwatch with an outsize date, and the Zeitwerk, with its precisely jumping numerals. Extraordinary complications such as Zeitwerk Minute RepeaterTriple Split and Grand Complication reinforce the Maison’s credo to “never stand still”.

Introduced in 2013, the Grand Complication represents the drive of traditional watchmaking to ever-new heights. The sporty yet elegant Odysseus, introduced in 2019, marked the start of a new chapter.

  • The new self-winding movement

The understated, elegant design of the SAXONIA ANNUAL CALENDAR is counterbalanced by its impressive inner values: the newly developed, 491-part, self-winding manufacture movement is lavishly finished by hand. The sapphire-crystal caseback reveals classic elements of traditional precision watchmaking. These include plates and bridges decorated with Glashütte ribbing, gold chatons secured with blued-steel screws as well as the balance cock featuring a whiplash spring engraved with a free-hand technique.

  • View of the nighttime sky

Framed by the subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, the earth’s companion moves across a star-spangled nocturnal sky. The lunar disc in 750 gold is treated with a deep-blue coating process. No less than 428 stars were cut out and, in combination with the underlying gold, produce a miniaturised image of the Milky Way. The synodic month of the moon is reproduced with an accuracy of 99.998 per cent. Assuming that the watch runs without interruption, the display would only have to be corrected once after 122.6 years.

  • Refined aesthetics

Lucid lines and painstakingly fine-tuned accents distinguish the face of the SAXONIA ANNUAL CALENDAR. Intricate details such as the auxiliary dials, slightly bevelled inward, and delicate baton appliques make up a harmonious composition of light and depth, endowing the dial with a timeless beauty and showcasing the optimal legibility of the displays for date, day of week, month and moon phase.
