  • What do you think of this rare Daytona?

The Daytona was the last Rolex watch fitted with an outsourced movement—the Caliber 4030, a modified Zenith El Primero—until it finally replaced this with its in-house Caliber 4130 in 2000. Clearly, the company was in exuberant mood that year as it shed its usually conservative approach to watch design and released the so-called “Daytona Beach” models in white gold. These were so-called due to their exotic colours and dials that were either mother-of-pearl, like this one, or hardstone. Whereas some dials feature Roman numerals, this one boasts diamond hour markers, and it even comes on its original pink lizard-skin strap, no longer available from Rolex. These “Beach Daytonas” were a highly unusual release from Rolex and are hugely collectable.

  • What was your first watch splurge?

What's the first watch you spend a significant amount of money on? For me—Jack—it was this Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris on a black alligator strap. Starting at Watchfinder in the photography department, I would get to see hundreds of watches a week, but it was this Polaris that really caught my eye—and I would buy it a few days later. The price point, brand, design, level of finishing ... for me, it was a no-brainer.
