The art of watchmaking

For several generations, the watchmakers of A. Lange & Söhne have pursued one goal: to craft timepieces that represent the pinnacle of international watchmaking artistry. At its Glashütte manufacture, the Maison crafts only a few thousand wristwatches per year, each endowed exclusively with proprietary movements that are lavishly decorated and twice assembled by hand. With 69 manufacture calibres developed since 1990, Lange has secured a top-tier position among the world’s finest watch Maisons.

Unforgettable masterpieces

Icons include Lange 1, the first regularly produced wristwatch with an outsize date, and the Zeitwerk, with its precisely jumping numerals. Extraordinary complications such as Zeitwerk Minute RepeaterTriple Split and Grand Complication reinforce the Maison’s credo to “never stand still”.

Introduced in 2013, the Grand Complication represents the drive of traditional watchmaking to ever-new heights. The sporty yet elegant Odysseus, introduced in 2019, marked the start of a new chapter.

Celebrating the DATOGRAPH

To mark the 25th anniversary of the DATOGRAPH, A. Lange & Söhne introduces two new masterpieces at Watches and Wonders 2024.

The DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD “Lumen” is a lustrous new interpretation of the sophisticated timepiece, exhibiting distinctive aesthetics even in the dark. In parallel, the DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN shines in white gold with a blue dial.

  • The technically elaborate jumping numerals mechanism in our second generation ZEITWERK consists of 122 individual parts, which need to be carefully assembled and adjusted by our watchmakers.

The core elements of the patented mechanism are three numeral discs, which show the hours and minutes from left to right. After exactly 60 seconds have elapsed, they move forward in a fraction of a second.

  • The complex design of our RICHARD LANGE MINUTE REPEATER is based on the traditional sound format: when the slide integrated into the left-hand case flank is actuated, the chiming mechanism strikes the hours, the quarter hours, and the minutes.

187 parts ensure the function of this mechanism. And few of them are responsible for a special feature: the pause elimination. This function skips the common pause between the hour and minute strike when no double tone must be struck.

  • In this edition of Lange Figures, we highlight the number of individual parts that, when assembled, bring various mechanisms and complications in our watches to life.

Around 200 years ago, the tourbillon was invented to keep the time very precisely. The horologically intricate construction, which can be found in our DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD “Lumen”, consists of 68 parts.

One of them is the V-shaped arresting spring - an invention of our watchmakers from 2008.
This part allows something that was not possible before: to stop the tourbillon and to set the watch with one-second accuracy.
