  • WHEN STONE BECOMES A DIAL Not every black dial begins with paint or lacquer. Some begin with stone. Onyx has long found its place in fine watchmaking, prized for its deep black appearance and beautifully polished surface. Transforming it into a dial, however, requires remarkable precision: the stone must be selected, cut into an extremely thin disc, shaped and carefully polished, all while working with a naturally fragile material.   • DESIGNED FOR THE COCKPIT Some design signatures begin with a very practical problem. In 1983, Breitling developed a mechanical chronograph for the Italian Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team. To help protect the crystal inside the tight confines of a jet cockpit, four raised rider tabs were positioned around the bezel at 15-minute intervals. A year later, that design evolved into the Chronomat. Alongside its distinctive Rouleaux bracelet, those functional details became defining features of one of Breitling’s most recognisable watches.
