The art of watchmaking

For several generations, the watchmakers of A. Lange & Söhne have pursued one goal: to craft timepieces that represent the pinnacle of international watchmaking artistry. At its Glashütte manufacture, the Maison crafts only a few thousand wristwatches per year, each endowed exclusively with proprietary movements that are lavishly decorated and twice assembled by hand. With 73 manufacture calibres developed since 1990, Lange has secured a top-tier position among the world’s finest watch Maisons.

Unforgettable masterpieces

Icons include Lange 1, the first regularly produced wristwatch with an outsize date, and the Zeitwerk, with its precisely jumping numerals. Extraordinary complications such as Zeitwerk Minute RepeaterTriple Split and Grand Complication reinforce the Maison’s credo to “never stand still”.

Introduced in 2013, the Grand Complication represents the drive of traditional watchmaking to ever-new heights. The sporty yet elegant Odysseus, introduced in 2019, marked the start of a new chapter.

  • An aperture in the dial of the CABARET TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD affords a captivating view of the tourbillon. Its upper bridge and the top side of the cage are decorated with an elaborate finishing technique: black polish. The tourbillon also features a complex stop-seconds mechanism. It was developed in the manufacture and allows the tourbillon to be halted at any time, and to subsequently set the time with one-second accuracy.

While this function is standard in conventional mechanical watches, it remained an unresolved matter in tourbillon watches for a long time. The solution, presented in 2008, was a milestone in the history of precision watchmaking.

  • With the CABARET TOURBILLON HONEYGOLD, A. Lange & Söhne presents a new, exclusive version of its distinctive, rectangular timepiece, limited to 50 pieces. Its case and dial are crafted from 750 honey gold (HONEYGOLD®). The warm-hued lustre of Lange´s exclusive gold alloy contrasts crisply with the black-rhodiumed surfaces, giving the relief dial a striking three-dimensional effect.

Below the dial, the dedicated form movement ‒ the manually wound calibre L042.1 ‒ is quietly at work. Its twin mainspring barrel delivers a power reserve of 120 hours. The tourbillon’s stop-seconds device allows the watch to be set with one-second accuracy. Particularly eye-catching is the elaborate black polish of selected tourbillon components.

  • The new self-winding movement

The understated, elegant design of the SAXONIA ANNUAL CALENDAR is counterbalanced by its impressive inner values: the newly developed, 491-part, self-winding manufacture movement is lavishly finished by hand. The sapphire-crystal caseback reveals classic elements of traditional precision watchmaking. These include plates and bridges decorated with Glashütte ribbing, gold chatons secured with blued-steel screws as well as the balance cock featuring a whiplash spring engraved with a free-hand technique.
