Training and Development

High quality goods can only be produced by highly skilled employees who are passionate about the history and heritage of their brand. This devotion to product excellence is not confined to the design and production but must infuse the broader customer experience, both when buying our products and for after-sale service.

Employees develop, refresh and build their key skills. The Group has no single prescription for this. Instead each Maison develops the approach that most closely fits its tradition, brand and process. There are, however, certain commonalities. Each Maison has a rigorous approach to staff appraisal and development and managers work together with employees to develop tailored programmes of personal and professional development.

Training is not limited to any particular channel. In some instances there is no substitute for on-the-job training, for learning from experienced, skilled colleagues. In other cases staff benefit significantly from external training opportunities. We also strongly encourage self-learning and development.

Many of our Maisons have established dedicated training academies to foster key design, development or customer service skills. In addition, the Maisons operate training schemes – either independently or together – with industry or government sponsored programmes to train the next generations of craftsmen and women. During the year over 30 trainees qualified from these programmes.

Case Study: Employee development at A. Lange & Söhne
Employee development at A. Lange & Söhne Excellent craftsmanship is the hallmark of a Lange watch. To develop the next generation of master craftsmen and women, the company set up an in-house watchmaking school in 1997. Competition to be accepted is fierce. Typically, over 100 applications are received for the five available places on the three-year apprenticeship scheme. Apprentices in the school are taught by two teachers with support from the existing master craftsmen and women. Graduates who join Lange then serve an additional six to 18 months undertaking ‘on-the-job’ training before becoming fully operational.

The company also supports a series of local and international watchmaking schools through the donation of equipment, development of course materials and presentations from Lange staff. Lange offers a range of other learning opportunities for its staff encompassing both personal and professional development. The company offers language laboratories, physical fitness training as well as more traditional areas such as health and safety. A retail academy has also now been launched.

As part of this representatives from stores have the opportunity to meet and be inspired by the master craftsmen and women of Lange. This helps them understand the exacting process and values which lie behind the creation of a unique Lange timepiece. The Lange Academy has set new milestones in industry training standards. Since the official opening in July 2007 key sales personnel from each of the brand's official retailers worldwide have successfully become 'Ambassadors' of the brand. After having had the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by the master craftsmen and women of Lange, their understanding of the precise process and values which lie behind the creation of a unique Lange timepiece has been consolidated and greatly enriched.
